The tenth anniversary of the Mohawk Show, which celebrates the work of designers and printers around the world, received a record number of entries this year. We are delighted to announce that the Tobias Frere-Jones Poster we designed for AGDA NSW was one of 15 finalists selected this year. It will be displayed as part of a travelling exhibition and accompanying catalogue that traverses the globe in 2010. Thanks to David Pidgeon (AGDA Vic) and Simon Pemberton (AGDA NSW) for their support on this project, and to Raleigh Paper (the paper used on the poster was Mohawk Navajo).
Led by the Australian Graphic Design Association, EyeSaw is an annual event that runs as part of SydneyDesign, a 16 day festival now in its thirteenth year. Each year graphic designers are asked to respond to a specific theme with a piece of visual communication; the responses are displayed in Omnibus Lane, a busy byway just minutes from the Powerhouse Museum. This year, for the first time, studios from across Australia and New Zealand were invited to submit their work. We were delighted to be part of this list, responding to a theme of ‘Humanity/Equality’.

We are pleased to announce that Eat Ate was awarded the best-designed cookbook at the 57th APA Book Design Awards held in Sydney on May 21. This success follows last year’s AGDA Pinnacle Award and we again share the glory with the book’s creator and guiding hand, Guy Mirabella, and the publishers Hardie Grant. Our second entry, MEAT, was also acknowledged with a High Commendation, effectively delivering us a first and second place in an extremely competitive category.
Melbourne Museum of Printing (MMOP) is a working museum of typography and printing and houses one of the world’s largest collections of preserved printing machinery and artefacts. The MMOP is maintained by a committed band of letterpress devotees lead by its proprietor Michael Isaachsen who oversaw a transition from commercial typefoundry (the Australian Type Foundry) to non-profit museum in the 1990’s.

Based on the torrent of resumes appearing in our email, things are getting pretty ugly out there, particularly for recent graduates seeking work. We are by no means a renowned studio, so I hate to think how many the guys at 3Deep get. As far as I am aware, most good jobs in this industry still go through word of mouth, so unsolicited email is really a form of cold calling where the chances of success are minimal. If your primary ambition is simply to get an interview, these are some suggestions which may help shorten the odds.

A visit to the Mance Design workspace is an invigorating experience. Unlike the relative calm and contained atmosphere of a graphic design studio such as our own, the Mance team surround themselves with an eclectic cacophony of objects and sounds.

Internationally acclaimed type designer Tobias Frere Jones is returning to Melbourne in May. Tobias has designed over five hundred typefaces and is currently the Principal and Director of Typography at renowned New York foundry Hoefler & Frere Jones. He is in Melbourne to present at AGIdeas and to conduct a type masterclass (assisted by Wendy Ellerton) at RMIT The Works. Full details can be found at the AGDA website. We are currently designing a promotional poster for his visit which will be documented and added to the folio section soon.
Eat Ate and Meat have both been short-listed in the ‘Best Designed Cookbook’ category for the 57th APA Book Design Awards. The winners are announced in May at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. Our thanks go to all those involved from Hardie Grant, especially Mary and Ellie, and the 2 authors, Guy and Adrian, who share an evangelical zeal for food and life in general.
Flexibility is the current buzzword in identity design. Rigid and static are out, versatile and fluid are the go. Much of our recent identity work embraces this philosophy, and the corporate profile we developed for Cunsolo Architects exemplifies it.

Many years ago, I was given a studio tour by my mentor, a distinguished local designer. The lasting memory I have, apart from the monasterial silence and my own nervous disposition, was the vast studio library. Shelf upon shelf peppered with tomes on all manner of subjects including, but not limited to, art, architecture and graphic design.

The winners of the 9th Australian Graphic Design Association Biennial Awards were announced on October 25 in Adelaide. Hofstede Design enjoyed a successful evening with a Distinction in the Miscellaneous category for The Face of Age calendar, and a Pinnacle Award in Books for Eat Ate. Just one Pinnacle can be awarded in each category, and only if an entry achieves a unanimously high score of 90% or above.
We are extremely proud to have been recognised by our peers for these two significant projects.
If you browse through the teetering Ikea shelving at any garage sale worth its weight, tucked among the self-help books and footballer biographies, you may be lucky enough to find a pelican soft-cover, identified by its distinctive blue spine and consistently brilliant cover design. Though less celebrated than its famous orange friend the penguin, it shares a comparable design pedigree.

When I started at design school in the mid eighties, there was very little written or published about graphic design. By the end of the decade, titles like Emigre and The Graphic Language of Neville Brody had helped trigger an explosion in graphic design publishing that continues unabated. A multitude of choices are now available covering every conceivable topic under to the broad heading of graphic design. Many are worthwhile, and have contributed greatly to a new spirit of discourse in the industry.

News: 10.08 / MEAT
Hot off the press and in time for the Christmas stocking, MEAT is the first book for Melbourne chef and meat evangelist Adrian Richardson. More than just a pretty recipe book, MEAT offers practical information on the purchasing, cooking and eating of a wide range of different meats. Our second major book project with the team at Hardie Grant, MEAT will be documented and added to our website in the coming weeks.
